ree

Nestled in the heart of Bastrop, Texas, the Bastrop County Emergency Food Pantry & Support Center is driven by the unwavering dedication of its Executive Director, Tresha Silva.

With over 23 years at the helm, Tresha’s journey from education coordinator at the Family Crisis Center to her current leadership role exemplifies a deep-rooted commitment to community welfare (bastropfoodpantry.org).

🎓 From Early Roots to Leadership

Initially joining the non-profit sector as an Education Coordinator, Tresha transitioned to the Food Pantry in 2001. Equipped with education from Austin Community College and non-profit management credentials from the University of Texas at Austin, she's furthered her expertise through pursuit of a Business Administration degree at Huston-Tillotson University (bastropfoodpantry.org).

🏅 Recognitions & Civic Engagement

Tresha’s influence extends well beyond organizational walls. Appointed by County Judge Ronnie McDonald, she served and chaired the Aging Advisory Council for the Capital Area Council of Governments. In 2004, she received the Bastrop Chamber of Commerce’s Point of Light Award and was a runner-up for the County’s Best Community Volunteer in 2007 (bastropfoodpantry.org). Most notably, the Central Texas Food Bank honored her as a “Hunger Hero” in 2017 for her tireless work against hunger (bastropfoodpantry.org).

🌟 A Pillar of Community Dedication

Earlier this year, the Bastrop Food Pantry celebrated Tresha’s 24 years of service, a testament to her profound dedication and the impact she has had on countless individuals and families (m.facebook.com).

📈 Leading Growth & Innovation

Under Tresha’s guidance, the Pantry recently broke ground on a $7.5 million, 9,200 sq ft expansion at 1201 Pine St., slated to open by Christmas. This new facility aims to double food storage capacity from 500,000 to 1 million pounds (communityimpact.com).

Key improvements include:

  • A grocery-style selection model, empowering clients to choose their own fresh produce, proteins, grains, and beverages (communityimpact.com).

  • A nutrition and education center, offering computer labs, job readiness workshops, and financial literacy classes.

  • A shared nonprofit resource space and senior-friendly programming (communityimpact.com).

The expansion is near completion; Tresha and the team have raised 96% of their goal, with a matching grant from the Mabee Foundation contingent on raising the remaining $400,000 by July 2025 (communityimpact.com).

💬 A Voice for the Vulnerable

Reflecting on the challenges faced by Bastrop's working families, Tresha remarked:

“We see … hard‑working families … trying to thrive and survive, but they just don’t make a living wage … that will allow them to move into a place of being food secure rather than food insecure.” (bastropfoodpantry.org)

🍽️ Services Under Her Stewardship

The pantry, under Tresha’s leadership, offers a wide range of vital services:

  • Emergency food assistance

  • Educational initiatives on nutrition and budgeting

  • Fresh Foods for Families, Open Arms, Brown Bag, and Nibbles Backpack programs

In Summary

Tresha Silva’s leadership at the Bastrop County Emergency Food Pantry stands as a beacon of sustained service, innovation, and compassion. Her blend of strategic vision, community collaboration, and personal dedication illustrates how one individual can mobilize an entire community toward food security and empowerment. As the Pantry prepares to unveil its expanded facility, Tresha’s tireless advocacy ensures that Bastrop residents have not only access to food, but also dignity, education, and hope for a brighter future.

For those inspired to contribute or learn more, the Pantry welcomes donations, volunteer support, and educational participation through its website and new facility.
